So important is the grinder to fine coffee, that when people starting the journey of exploration into quality coffee ask me my opinion about a particular espresso machine or something similar, I respond by asking ‘what about the grinder’. I go on to urge them to buy a decent grinder before even looking at sophisticated brewing methods. But that can be a problem…

Low cost coffee equipment
It can be very hard to find coffee equipment – especially espresso related gear – at a price to encourage beginners to dip their toe in.
For decent espresso, the grinder is at least as important as the espresso machine. And a burr-type grinder is essential for espresso.

My Climax Grinder
Around 18 months ago, I took a deep breath and bought a coffee grinder that was planned to last me an indefinite period – A Mazzer Mini – but that was before I started drum roasting beans and supplying family, friends and church members.
I’ve guesstimated that my little Mazzer Mini has ground up around 300 kgs of coffee in it’s short life! I should add that apart from needing a new set of burrs, the Mazzer is wearing this work very well. But it is tedious to fill coffee bags (zip-lock pouches) by grinding into the doser, then transferring the grounds into a plastic container, then into the pouch. [more…]
