Colombian RFA Excelso Kachalu Organic
Colombian coffee has the reputation of tasting, well, just like coffee – nothing outstanding, but just nice coffee.
But that is changing, and some fantastic coffees are coming out of Colombia these days. This is one…
Coelho's Gold Monsooned Malabar
If you have never come across a Monsooned Malabar before, this is a very unusual bean.
This a high quality coffee grown in a hilly range in India called the Western Ghats under ideal coffee-growing conditions.
Then the monsooning process start…
Green Coffee of the Month
I’m been surprised at the interest in a Green Coffee of the Month Club.
The idea being that home roasters could pay a 3, 6 or 12 month ‘subscription’ and have a package of 1, 2, or 2.5Kg of different green beans delivered to their door each month.
Now perhaps some of the interest is understandable in the light of the demise of Ozgreens, and some people might say that this idea is no different.
But I beg to differ…
Future directions for Ministry Grounds
Like many things in life, my coffee hobby has grown and morphed over the years.
Mostly, that’s been positive. I’ve grown in my understanding and appreciation of fine coffee. I’ve improved my cupping and roasting skills. And I’ve realised how much more I have to learn and understand!
Right from the start I’ve enjoyed sharing with others, both the fruits of my roasting, but also sharing the bounty that the relationship with my wholesaler has bought with other home roasters.
But along the way, some things have become more complicated than I would like, and so it’s time to pause and rethink how my coffee obsession hobby should continue – and if you are a home roaster, I would like your input…
Consistency of crop
One of the great joys of sourcing, roasting and drinking fine coffee is the natural variation between each year’s crops.
Of course, that has two sides: some years are superb, and some years… well, disappointing.
But a couple of the suppliers of two very different types of beans have proved to be remarkably consistent (in a good way)…
Brazilian Aqua Limpa 'Bohara Crystal'
This is a pulped natural Brazilian bean of exceptional quality.
Fazenda Agua Limpa has been run by the same family for more than 50 years.
The coffee beans are grown in very rich and fertile soils.
The bean shows a warm, buttery mouthfeel, excellent body with a hint of chocolate.
Sumatran Mandheling 'Blue Batak'
This is one of the finest Mandheling coffees available from Indonesia. Blue in colour, large bean size, the cup is full bodied, incredible Mandheling flavour and fine acidity.
Fair Trade 2006 East Timor Organic
This is a fine example of the best of East Timorese coffee. Well balanced bright clean tasting. A pleasant degree of acidity with medium to full flavoured body.
