It's easy to turn beans brown...
I’ve had a few conversations recently with some people wanting to jump on the current bandwagon of coffee roasting as a full time occupation.
I sense that some of them are looking for a sea change of some kind and see this lovely, social hobby of ours as a nirvana-like oasis in the big,bad world. Apart from the harsh realities of running your own business (not an attractive thing to me at all), the big problem is expressed by Mike, a guy on a busy homeroasting email forum. He said:

No big deal you say. Until the respected Alan Frew weighs in with this quote:

Blending Progress 2
I’ve continued to play with the Brazil/Sumatran/Ethiopian/Indian Catimore blend.
Last weekend I roasted up a batch reversing the proportions of the Sumatran and the Catimore (giving the Sumatran the larger proportion), and I’m very pleased with the result – both as espresso and plunger.
After two days rest, the espresso version produced a sweet and spicy drink with better body, but with the spicy higher notes…

OK, this idea of combining a passion for the gospel with a passion for excellent coffee is gaining strength.
There are now 12+ people scattered all over Sydney who are interested in getting this idea off the ground. In case you missed my last post on this, the idea is for Christian coffeegeeks to establish a group to seek to evangelise non-Christian coffeegeeks on their own ground (that is, coffee related activity). Coffee Evangelism - another direction
I spent a very pleasant morning today with a group of Moore College students who also happen to be coffee geeks.
We sampled lots of nice coffee, talked about different aspects of roasting and grinders and the such. We also chatted about how we can use coffee in ministry – as an ice breaker and as a pre-evangelistic tool. But perhaps the best part of the day was considering how we could better evangelise the broader coffee geek community in Sydney. [more…]
