My house finds itself with a knockbox full of spent pucks of coffee at the end of every day. We would pull anywhere between six and eighteen double shots a day. That’s around 14g of coffee per puck, which would work out at more than 71Kgs of coffee grounds per year!

Roasting at home - part 1
Roasting my own coffee has really been the watershed in appreciating the best that coffee has to offer.
While I enjoyed buying and drinking coffee micro roasters who really care about genuinely fresh coffee, I was still dependant on someone else buying a bean that I liked, roasting it the way they wanted, and then having to pay to have it shipped to me.
Aside from the lack of control over the whole process, it was expensive – around $32-36 per kilo plus postage. [more…]
