Coffee and ministry - like love and marriage

If you’ve browsed this blog at all, you will know that it’s comes from my love of combining my passion for Jesus with my passion for coffee. I figured the best way to justify my coffee ‘habit’ was on ministry grounds…

So last Saturday saw another great opportunity.
My church had a slightly crazy weekend of outreach events, so I obtained the use of a small two group commercial machine (thanks Dean! ) – an Expobar Markus Control (see pic) with the addition of the same digital temperature controls as used on the Expobar Minore (aka Morris) on each group.
The task at hand was to serve fine coffee (Ministry Grounds of course) at a Men’s Breakfast and for a women’s event lasting all afternoon. And serve coffee we did!
Dunno how many shots I pulled, but we went through nearly 3kgs of roasted beans (using double shots) and about 750g of decaf. Oh, and a load of Dean’s yummy organic hot chocolate.
The machine handled it well. Using a standard powerpoint (but a dedicated power circuit), it didn’t miss a beat. Playing around with the brew temp control meant I could optimise the brew temp for regular and slightly different for decaf.
The steaming was great: loads of power, but nicely controllable.

It was pretty satisfying overall, with lots of nice comments like “why don’t we have this at church every week?” (why indeed!), and we had a number of good, if short, conversations with visitors.

Now to plot a way to get a machine like this permenantly…

  2. Yep. Well a standard power circuit has 15 amp capacity, and as long as nothing else is plugged into that circuit, it runs fine. My guess is it draws around 13 amps…

With other two or even three group machines there are wiring tricks that can be legitimately done to allow use on a 15 amp circuit. Those tricks involve changes that make different parts of the machine draw power sequentially rather than concurrently. On some machines, a second boiler element is disabled to allow use on 15 amps circuits.
